Profile:
Arsenal first attempted to sign Kanu in November '98 and, after a series of hurdles had been overcome, he signed for the club on January 15th 1999, for an undisclosed fee, believed to be around £4.5m. Kanu was a member of the Ajax side which won the coveted UEFA Champions' League in '95 and, in the following year's Olympic Games, he helped Nigeria to win the gold medal. Kanu was awarded the prestigious accolade of '96 African Player of the Year before his roll-call of club, national and individual honours was shattered by the detection of a serious heart defect, which necessitated surgery. As well as the Champions' League and Olympic successes, Kanu has won a trio of Dutch national championships, including two league and cup doubles.
