Ai Weiwei is a Beijing-born Chinese contemporary artist and filmmaker whose multidisciplinary work spans installation, architecture, design, publishing and photography. His work concerning the 2008 Sichuan earthquake, along with his detention in 2011 and subsequent travel restrictions, placed him prominently in international discussions of human rights and artistic freedom.
